About the District The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed for college and career. The district serves 19,000 students across 34 schools and 4 alternative programs.
Job Responsibilities The position involves highly specialized clerical work related to maintaining financial records for a governmental department. Under general supervision the employee performs planning, recording and reporting of cash receipts, disbursements, journals and general ledgers.
- Maintain books, ledgers and journals that control financial transactions of a small department or agency.
- Post entries to various accounts using supporting records, manually or via computer.
- Maintain accurate records of appropriations, encumbrances and determine unencumbered balances.
- Prepare monthly trial balances, reconcile with fiscal reports, make adjustments and close books for the designated fiscal period.
- Review accounts periodically for discrepancies and correct coding.
- Supply appropriate code numbers for newly funded accounts or increases in appropriations.
- Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies in terms of appropriations and disbursements.
- Prepare bank deposits and allocate amounts to appropriate accounts.
- Prepare fund transfer requests and keep records of travel expenses.
- Assist department head in preparing the annual budget by providing financial and statistical reports.
- Communicate with vendors and departmental staff on processing of financial documents.
- Train new employees assigned to the accounting section and plan work for subordinates.
Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics Thorough knowledge of bookkeeping principles, financial and statistical reporting methods, and fiscal office procedures. Ability to operate adding machines, calculators and automated accounting systems. Ability to supervise others, follow oral and written instructions and implement auditor recommendations.
Minimum Qualifications
- One (1) year of permanent competitive status as an Account Clerk II or Account Clerk Typist II, or three (3) years of account‑keeping experience.
- Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration or Finance, or completion of 18 semester credit hours in accounting.
Working Hours 40 hours per week, full‑time, non‑exempt.
Salary Starting at $26.01 per hour according to the Unit 9 contract.
